Common questions
How can I tell if my dog is overweight?
You should feel the ribs easily under a thin fat layer, see a waist from above and a belly tuck from the side. If you need firm pressure to feel the ribs or there's no waist, your dog is probably overweight. Use the body condition checker for a guided score.
How do I weigh my pet at home?
Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your pet, and subtract. For small pets, use a kitchen scale with a box or carrier. Weigh at the same time of day.
How often should I weigh my pet?
Monthly for healthy adults, every 1–2 weeks during a weight-loss plan or for growing young animals.
How much weight change is worrying?
Unplanned loss or gain of about 10% of body weight is worth discussing with your vet, sooner if your pet seems unwell.
