Life stages follow AAHA guidance: puppy/kitten under 1 year, then adult; dogs are "senior" in roughly the last quarter of expected lifespan (we use 8+ years, earlier for giant breeds), cats are "mature" from 7 and "senior" from 11. The old "multiply by 7" rule is not accurate.

Common questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. Dogs and cats age fastest in their first two years, then more slowly, and large dogs age faster than small ones. The “multiply by 7” rule is a myth, so this tool reports real age and life stage instead.
When is a dog or cat considered senior?
Under AAHA guidance, cats are mature from about 7 and senior from about 11. Dogs become senior in roughly the last quarter of their expected lifespan, often around 7–8 years, and earlier for giant breeds.
Why does life stage matter?
Life stage changes diet, vaccination and screening needs. Senior pets usually benefit from check-ups at least twice a year.
