Daily calorie calculator

A starting estimate of daily energy needs for dogs and cats. Adjust by body condition with your vet's help.

Enter a weight to see the estimate.

Uses resting energy × 1.6 for adult neutered dogs, × 1.2 for adult neutered cats and × 2.5 for those under one year. Activity, breed, body condition, pregnancy and illness change real needs — this is an estimate, not a feeding prescription. Check with your vet.

Common questions

How many calories does my dog need per day?

Start with resting energy (70 × body weight in kg^0.75), then multiply by about 1.6 for a typical neutered adult dog. A 10 kg neutered adult dog needs about 630 kcal a day.

How many calories does a cat need per day?

A typical neutered indoor adult cat needs about 1.2 × resting energy, roughly 240–285 kcal a day for a 4–5 kg cat.

Should I just feed the number on the food bag?

Use the bag and this estimate as starting points, then weigh your pet every few weeks and adjust by 5–10% to keep an ideal body condition. Ask your vet if your pet is overweight, pregnant or ill.
