How much should I feed my pet?

Turn your dog or cat's daily calorie needs into grams of their actual food. You need the calories printed on the label.

Enter the weight and the food's kcal per 100 g. If the label shows kcal per kg, divide by 10.

Starting estimate for healthy adult neutered pets (× 2.5 resting energy under one year). Weigh your pet every 2–4 weeks and adjust by about 10% to keep an ideal body condition. Pregnant, nursing, ill or very active pets need a vet's plan.

Common questions

How much food should I feed my cat?

A typical 4 kg neutered adult indoor cat needs about 240 kcal a day. That's roughly 65 g of a 370 kcal/100 g dry food, or about 280 g of an 85 kcal/100 g wet food.

How much should I feed my dog per day?

A 10 kg neutered adult dog needs about 630 kcal a day, around 170 g of a 370 kcal/100 g dry food. Larger and more active dogs need more.

Where do I find the calories on pet food?

Look for "energy" or "metabolisable energy" on the bag or tin, usually as kcal/100 g, kcal/kg or kcal per cup. The feeding guide on the pack is a starting range, not an exact amount.

Should I mix wet and dry food?

Yes, that's fine. Work out the daily calories, then split them between the two foods using each one's own kcal per 100 g.
