Body condition score checker
A guided hands-on check for dogs and cats, based on the WSAVA 9-point body condition scale. Ideal is 4–5.
Answer all three questions to see an estimated score.
A home estimate only, not a diagnosis. Thick coats, pregnancy, muscle loss and breed shape can mislead. Your vet can score your pet and check muscle condition. Scale: WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines.
Next: estimate daily calories work out how much food to feed, or log weight over time.
Common questions
What is an ideal body condition score?
On the 9-point scale, 4–5 is ideal: ribs easy to feel under a thin fat layer, a visible waist from above and a belly tuck from the side.
How can I tell if my dog is overweight?
If you need firm pressure to feel the ribs, the waist is hard to see, or the belly is flat or sags, your pet is likely above ideal (6 or more).
How often should I check?
Once a month at home is a good habit, plus a professional score at each vet visit.
