History
Developed in 19th-century Nova Scotia, inspired by fox behaviour, to attract and retrieve waterfowl.
Appearance
Medium, compact red-coated retriever with white markings, a feathered tail and an intent expression.
Exercise and activity
Two hours daily for most adults; retrieving, swimming and dog sports are ideal.
Care and grooming
Weekly brushing, more when shedding; low-maintenance compared with its energy needs.
