History
Developed in the 18th century by border farmers to control foxes, working alongside mounted hunts over rough country.
Appearance
Small, narrow-bodied terrier with an otter-like head, harsh weatherproof coat and keen expression.
Exercise and activity
An hour or more daily with off-lead sniffing where safe; loves digging and earthdog-style games.
Care and grooming
Hand-strip or clip the coat two to three times a year; a secure garden is essential as they dig and squeeze through gaps.
