Trade and drop

Build safe, willing release of objects by exchanging them for something valuable.

Set up an easy success, mark the wanted choice, reward promptly and add only one small challenge at a time.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Offer the trade

    While the dog holds a low-value toy, present a reward at nose level without reaching for the object.

  2. Step 2

    Mark release

    Mark the instant the mouth opens, deliver the reward and leave the toy in place.

  3. Step 3

    Give it back

    Return the safe object frequently so releasing does not always end access.

  4. Step 4

    Add the cue

    Say ‘drop’ just before presenting the trade once release is predictable.

Troubleshooting

  • Use a less valued object and better food if the dog turns away.
  • Seek qualified help for freezing, hard staring, growling or snapping.
