Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Present the stick close

    Hold the stick a few centimetres from the beak.

  2. Step 2

    Mark any touch

    Click or say 'good' the instant the beak touches, then give the treat.

  3. Step 3

    Move the stick

    Gradually move it so the bird walks a step to reach it.

  4. Step 4

    Use it for everyday tasks

    Guide the bird onto a perch, scales or into a travel carrier.

Troubleshooting

  • If the bird is afraid of the stick, leave it near the cage for days first.
  • Keep sessions short and end on success.
