Litter training a rabbit

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Put hay in or over the tray

    Rabbits eat and toilet at the same time. A hay rack above the tray makes the tray the natural place to be.

  2. Step 2

    Confine to a small area first

    Start in a pen with the tray in the corner the rabbit has already chosen. Success in a small space comes first.

  3. Step 3

    Move stray droppings into the tray

    Scent marks the toilet area. Sweep up accidents with paper towel and add them to the tray.

  4. Step 4

    Clean accidents with white vinegar

    This removes the scent that draws the rabbit back to the wrong spot.

  5. Step 5

    Expand space gradually

    Add room only as reliability holds; add a second tray in larger areas.

Troubleshooting

  • A suddenly unreliable trained rabbit may have a urinary problem — see a vet.
  • Territorial marking in an unneutered rabbit will not resolve with training alone.
