Name response

Build a reliable, positive orientation to the handler when the pet hears their name.

DogsCats1–2 minutes, several times daily

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Start nearby

Say the name once in a cheerful neutral tone. Mark and reward the instant the animal turns towards you.

  2. Step 2

    Add gentle distraction

Practise in different rooms and at slightly greater distances. Keep the response easy enough to succeed.

  3. Step 3

    Use it, then release

After rewarding, let the animal return to what they were doing so the name does not predict the end of fun.

Troubleshooting

  • If there is no response, reduce distance and distraction rather than repeating the name.
  • Use better rewards and stop before interest fades.
