Basket muzzle conditioning

Build a positive emotional response to a well-fitted basket muzzle without forcing it onto the dog.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Muzzle predicts food

    Show the muzzle, feed, then put it away without approaching the dog’s face.

  2. Step 2

    Invite the nose

    Place food inside and let the dog choose to put their nose in; do not fasten straps.

  3. Step 3

    Build duration

    Feed through the muzzle for gradually longer comfortable nose-ins.

  4. Step 4

    Introduce straps

    Touch, lift and briefly fasten straps across separate sessions while continuing rewards.

Troubleshooting

  • Return to simply seeing the muzzle if the dog avoids it.
  • Have fit checked by a veterinarian or qualified professional.
