Leave it

Teach disengagement from food or objects without confrontation or guarding.

Dogs3–5 minutes

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Use a closed hand

Hold a low-value treat in a closed fist. Mark and reward from the other hand when the dog moves away.

  2. Step 2

    Open the hand

Progress to an open palm, covering the item if the dog approaches it.

  3. Step 3

    Put the item down

Practise with the item on the floor under your foot, then uncovered at a safe distance.

  4. Step 4

    Add the cue

Say ‘leave it’ once before presenting the setup, rewarding disengagement.

Troubleshooting

  • Use a less interesting practice item if frustration rises.
  • For guarded or dangerous objects, do not practise alone; seek qualified help.
