Guinea pig handling confidence

Reduce fear of being approached and lifted by building voluntary contact first.

Calm reward-based training setup for guinea pigs and small mammals
Four-stage reward-based training progression: set up, mark, reward and progress
Set up an easy success, mark the wanted choice, reward promptly and add only one small challenge at a time.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Be predictable

Sit quietly at floor level and place forage near you without reaching towards the animal.

  2. Step 2

    Reward approach

Let the guinea pig take food from a flat hand at their own pace, several sessions in a row.

  3. Step 3

    Use a tunnel

Teach them to walk into a tunnel or open carrier for food so transport does not require chasing.

  4. Step 4

    Support lifts

Lift with both hands supporting chest and hindquarters, hold for a few seconds, return and reward.

Troubleshooting

  • Freezing or hiding means slowing down, not persisting.
  • Keep sessions to one small step so the pen stays a safe place.
