Emergency recall
Build a special cue that predicts an exceptional reward and rapid return in urgent situations.
Dogs3–5 repetitions, twice weekly
Step by step
Step 1
Charge the cue
Say the unique cue once, immediately deliver a generous reward, then release the dog.
Step 2
Add a short return
Use the cue from a few steps away in a secure area and reward continuously when the dog reaches you.
Step 3
Build distance
Practise on a long line with gradually increasing distance and mild distractions.
Step 4
Protect its value
Use the cue rarely and never for something the dog dislikes.
Troubleshooting
- If the dog hesitates, return to a shorter distance and improve the reward.
- Never test the cue around unsafe distractions before extensive controlled practice.
