Introducing a nail grinder

Teach a dog to relax while its nails are ground, as an alternative to clippers.

Four-stage reward-based training progression: set up, mark, reward and progress
Set up an easy success, mark the wanted choice, reward promptly and add only one small challenge at a time.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Grinder off, treats on

Show the grinder, treat, put it away. Repeat until the dog brightens at the sight of it.

  2. Step 2

    Add the sound

Switch it on at a distance, treat, switch off. Move closer over sessions as the dog stays relaxed.

  3. Step 3

Touch the body, not the nail

Rest the running grinder briefly against the dog's shoulder or leg so the vibration is familiar, treating throughout.

  4. Step 4

    One nail, one second

Touch one nail for a single second, treat generously, stop. End the session there.

  5. Step 5

    Build gradually

Add seconds and nails over days. Little and often keeps the dog under threshold.

Troubleshooting

  • If the dog pulls its paw away, go back a step — pushing through creates a lasting fear.
  • Watch for heat: grind in short bursts so the nail never warms uncomfortably.
