Step by step

1. Step 1

   Create a start position

   Reward the animal for resting a paw or chin in a chosen position.

2. Step 2

   Build touch

   Briefly touch shoulder, leg and paw, rewarding after each comfortable repetition.

3. Step 3

   Introduce the tool

   Show and move the tool at a distance, then pair sound and gentle nail contact with rewards.

4. Step 4

   Trim one nail

   Only clip when body language remains relaxed. Reward generously and finish.

Troubleshooting

• Go back several steps after pulling away, freezing or struggling.
• Ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer to demonstrate safe anatomy and technique.
