Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Match the surface

    Watch what the cat scratches now — vertical sofa arm or horizontal carpet — and offer the same orientation in an acceptable material.

  2. Step 2

    Place the post at the crime scene

    Scratching marks territory, so the post must be where the cat already scratches, not hidden in a corner.

  3. Step 3

    Make the post irresistible

    Rub catnip into it, play wand games around it, and reward any investigation or scratch.

  4. Step 4

    Make furniture less appealing

    Temporarily cover scratched spots with double-sided tape or a throw while the habit transfers.

  5. Step 5

    Move the post gradually

    Once the post is in regular use, shift it a short distance each day to its final home.

Troubleshooting

  • Multiple cats need multiple posts in different locations.
  • Declawing is never the answer — it is illegal in many countries and causes lasting harm.
