What the evidence supports
Dog ownership is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity, and interaction with familiar animals is associated with short-term reductions in physiological stress markers. Assistance animals have well-documented functional benefits for specific disabilities.
Where the evidence is weaker
Claims that pet ownership straightforwardly improves mental health are complicated by selection effects: people who choose and can afford pets differ from those who do not. Longitudinal studies show mixed results, and caregiver burden is a real and under-discussed factor.
Oxytocin and mutual gaze
Research has found reciprocal increases in oxytocin in both dog and owner during mutual gazing, suggesting that dogs may have co-opted a bonding mechanism ordinarily seen between parent and infant. The finding is influential and still being replicated and refined.
How to read a pet science headline
Ask: was this correlation or a controlled experiment? How many animals? Was it preregistered? Who funded it? Single-study headlines about pet health and longevity deserve particular caution.
