What Cognition Research Tells Us About Dogs and Cats

Object permanence, social referencing, word learning and the limits of what we can currently claim.

Dogs read human signals unusually well

Dogs follow human pointing gestures from an early age and with minimal training — a skill that even chimpanzees find difficult. This appears to be a product of domestication rather than individual learning.

Word learning has real limits

A small number of exceptional dogs have learned hundreds of object labels, but most dogs learn far fewer and rely heavily on context and gesture. Claims about animals forming sentences with buttons remain contested and largely unreplicated under controlled conditions.

Cats are understudied, not unintelligent

Cats show object permanence, respond to their own names and discriminate their owner's voice from a stranger's. They are simply harder to test, because cats opt out of experiments that do not interest them.

Why this matters for owners

Understanding what animals can and cannot infer changes training. Dogs are not disobeying out of spite or dominance; they are frequently failing to generalise a cue from the kitchen to the park.
