Why enrichment matters

Indoor cats can live long, safe lives, but boredom can lead to over-grooming, weight gain, night-time activity and conflict between cats.

Play like a hunter

  • Two short wand-toy sessions daily
  • Let the cat 'catch' the toy at the end
  • Follow play with a small meal
  • Rotate toys weekly
  • Avoid laser pointers without a real toy to catch

Food and foraging

  • Puzzle feeders and treat balls
  • Scatter dry food in a box of paper
  • Hide small portions around the home
  • Use part of the daily ration as training rewards

Space and senses

  • Shelves, cat trees and window perches
  • Hiding boxes in quiet spots
  • Cat-safe grass
  • A secure window box or catio
  • Rotating scents such as silvervine or valerian toys
