Positive Reinforcement Training: How and Why It Works

The evidence behind reward-based training, and why aversive methods carry documented welfare and safety risks.

The mechanism in one paragraph

Behaviour that is reinforced increases in frequency. Mark the exact moment the animal does the right thing — with a clicker or a consistent word — then deliver something the animal genuinely values. Timing matters more than the size of the reward.

Why not punishment

Studies comparing training methods consistently find that aversive techniques, including prong and shock collars, are associated with increased stress signals, more fear-related behaviour and no better obedience outcomes. Several countries have banned electric shock collars outright.

Setting up a session that works

  • Keep sessions short: two to five minutes, several times daily
  • Start where the animal can succeed, then add difficulty in one dimension at a time
  • Raise criteria only after roughly eight out of ten correct repetitions
  • End while the animal still wants more
  • Use high-value food for hard tasks and everyday kibble for easy ones

It is not just for dogs

Cats learn to enter carriers voluntarily, parrots learn to step onto scales, rabbits learn recall, and rats learn complex trick chains. Any animal that eats can be trained with rewards.
