Handling for vet visits

Prepare the animal for routine examination so veterinary care is less frightening.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Consent first

    Offer a start position such as a chin rest or paw placement and reward the animal for choosing it.

  2. Step 2

    Touch briefly

    Touch one area — shoulder, ear, paw — for one second, then reward and pause.

  3. Step 3

    Mimic examination

    Gradually add lifting a lip, checking an ear, running hands along the body and brief restraint.

  4. Step 4

    Practise the surroundings

    Add a table surface, a stethoscope, a towel or a stranger's hand as separate small steps.

Troubleshooting

  • Any move away ends the repetition — do not follow the animal.
  • Split each step into shorter contact rather than pushing through tension.
