What matters
- Top access
- Allows an anxious cat to be lifted out gently, or examined while still sitting in the base.
- Removable lid
- The best carriers unscrew so the animal stays in the familiar base throughout the consultation.
- Crash security
- Look for seatbelt routing points and, for dogs, independently crash-tested designs.
- Ventilation
- Airflow on at least two sides, with the option to cover for a nervous animal.
- Cleanability
- A wipeable base with a removable pad handles travel accidents.

Hard carrier with removable top
Best for: Cats and rabbits, especially anxious ones
Watch out: Clip-only lids can pop open — prefer screw fixings
Soft fabric carrier
Best for: Small calm animals and airline cabin travel
Watch out: Offers little crash protection and is harder to disinfect
Crash-tested travel crate
Best for: Dogs travelling regularly by car
Watch out: Heavy and needs correct boot or seat anchoring
Buying notes
Leave the carrier out at home as everyday furniture with bedding and treats inside. A carrier that only appears on vet days becomes a predictor of stress.
