What to look for

Difficulty
The first version should be nearly free; frustration teaches animals to abandon the toy.
Durability
Material must withstand the individual's chewing strength without splitting into swallowable pieces.
Cleanability
Wet food and paste feeders need dishwasher-safe or fully openable designs.

Sizing and fit

Openings should be larger than the animal's muzzle can wedge into, and the toy itself too large to swallow.

Safety checks

  • Supervise the first several uses.
  • Discard cracked or chewed-through items.
  • Never use rings or handles an animal can trap a jaw or limb in.

Cleaning and maintenance

Wash after every wet-food use and at least weekly for dry food; inspect for damage each time.
