What to look for

Space
The tray should allow a cat to turn, dig and posture without touching the sides.
Entry
Low entrances support kittens, seniors and cats with painful joints.
Location
Quiet, accessible sites with escape options are usually preferred.

Sizing and fit

Aim for roughly one and a half times the cat’s nose-to-tail-base length; storage boxes can offer more usable space than many marketed trays.

Safety checks

  • Avoid trapping a cat in a covered or dead-end location.
  • Use unscented litter unless the cat clearly prefers otherwise.
  • Provide one tray per cat plus one, spread across locations.

Cleaning and maintenance

Scoop at least daily, wash regularly with mild unscented cleaner and replace litter gradually when changing type.
