Preparing a safe den, managing the night itself, and longer-term help for noise fears.

Prepare ahead
Make a den in a quiet room with bedding and covers. Walk dogs before dark and keep cats in, with a litter tray.
On the night
- Close curtains and play background music or TV
- Let your pet hide — don't pull it out
- Comforting a scared pet is fine
- Bring outdoor rabbits' hutches into a shed or garage, or cover them
Longer-term help
Sound desensitisation programmes started months ahead can help. Talk to your vet early; some pets benefit from prescribed medication.
